5G spectrum and frequencies: everything you need to know

HomeHow to, Tech5G spectrum and frequencies: everything you need to know

5G transmits information wirelessly via the electromagnetic spectrum, specifically the radio spectrum. Within the radio spectrum, there are different levels of frequency bands, some of which are used for this next-gen technology.

Everything you need to know about 5G

Since 5G is still in the early stages of deployment and not yet available in every country, you may hear about 5G bandwidth spectrum, spectrum auctions, mmWave 5G, and so on.

Don’t worry if this is confusing. The only thing you really need to know about 5G frequency bands is that different companies use different parts of the spectrum to transmit data. Using one part of the spectrum over another affects both the speed of the connection and the distance it can cover. Much more on this below.

Radio wave frequencies range from 3 kilohertz (kHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). Each part of the spectrum has a range of frequencies, called a band, which have a specific name.
