The clue to this puzzle is hidden in the upper right corner of the picture of the stone. The arrows indicate that in the instructions, right means left and up means down (A1). Follow the instructions as you read them this way to get the solution (A2), which is stone 3.11.
To solve this puzzle, you must go through all six given hints and determine the order of the books on the shelf. Start with the calculation in the third hint, which tells you that One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi is in position number 3. Then use the second hint to put Magical Theory in position 1 and A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration in position 2.
The first clue places A History of Magic in the last slot on the shelf. Go to clue number six, which places Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them in slot 7. Clue 5 places The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection in slot 5, while clue four places Magical Drafts and Potions in slot 4. Place The Standard Book of Spells (1) in the last slot, number 6, to get the answer 34567182.
