Apple’s M1-based Macs are here to replace hot, tired Intel models. They’re fast, they’re cool, and their batteries last, like, forever.

The M1 is a Mac-customized version of the A-series chips that power the iPhone and iPad. Because it’s evolved from those mobile chips, it uses very little power and runs very efficiently, generating very little heat. This in turn means it can run quickly, but the battery lasts all day. So unless you have a good compatibility reason to buy an Intel Mac, or you want a Mac that hasn’t made the switch yet, you should buy an M1. It’s an easy choice, as we’ll see, although it’s not for everyone yet.

“My soon-to-retire father didn’t want the first of a new generation of Macs, but something that was already proven,” architect and doting son James Robinson told Lifewire via direct message. “While Apple has been working on their own fab silicon for wearables for a while now, he didn’t want a gen 1 device.”

On the outside, these new M1 Macs—a MacBook Air, a MacBook Pro, and a Mac mini—look identical to their predecessors. Only the internals have changed; you get the same M1 chip inside all of these new Macs. The only difference is that the MacBook Pro and Mac mini still have fans, while the Air, like the iPad, doesn’t.
