You can’t update the firmware on AirPods, the Apple Pencil, and a MagSafe charger, but they still get updates whether you want them to or not.

This is a true Apple move: technology that doesn’t look like technology. These devices are almost like devices. When everything is right, they just work. Like a light switch or a landline phone, you never have to think about whether it’s doing its job. A new firmware update for AirPods is coming this week, but the only way to install it is to cross your fingers and wait. The obsession with simplicity, which has been in Apple’s DNA since the original Mac in 1984, isn’t always a good thing.

“Apple’s minimalist design choices are most evident in its premium hardware, but most dominant technology companies today know that minimizing friction in their customer experiences is strategically important,” technical advisor and wearables expert David Pring-Mill told Lifewire via email.

Apple's product philosophy is pretty simple to follow. Its computers and accessories must be beautifully designed, the best at what they do (by Apple's definition of best), and easy to use.
