ABC News reported that Melissa Witt wanted to surprise her mother by visiting Bowling World in December 1994. The outlet reported that Witt's mother played in a bowling league at Bowling World in Fort Smith, Arkansas. According to an official website, Witt made it to the parking lot of the venue but never entered the building. Based on evidence found in the parking lot, investigators believed that someone had abducted Witt.

ABC News reported that authorities found blood in Melissa Witt’s car and in the parking lot. Investigators also noted signs of a struggle. As a result, police launched an investigation and began a search. More than a month after her disappearance, two hunters found Witt’s nude body in the Ozark National Forest. As authorities continued their investigation, they identified a prime suspect in the case, Charles Ray Vines.
