Bose’s Ultra Open Earbuds don’t go in your ears. Instead, they hang from your earlobes like a pair of earrings, and look absolutely perfect for AR or any other scenario where you don’t want to be disconnected from the outside world.

Bose Ultra Open Earbuds Review: A Game-Changer?

In general, wireless earbuds like Apple’s AirPods and AirPods Pro intentionally block your ear holes so you can hear your music, podcasts, phone calls, and more. This passive noise isolation is great, and means you don’t have to crank up the volume to hear your music above the noise around you. But sometimes you want to hear what’s going on in the background. And other times, it may even be illegal to block your ears, such as while cycling in some cities and countries. There’s also one big new area where you may just want your audio to match the sound around you, and that’s augmented reality, or AR.

“The concept of headphones that don’t block your ears and act as wearable jewelry is very appealing. This design promotes situational awareness, which is crucial for safety and engagement with your surroundings, making them perfect for all-day wear in a variety of environments,” Alex Safavinia, designer and creative director at Explainer Videoly, told Lifewire via email.

Noise cancellation is great. The AirPods Pro, for example, use active noise cancellation (ANC) along with the passive cancellation provided by the form-fitting silicone earbuds to block out everything from traffic noise to ambient airplane noise to the late-night party next door. Noise cancellation lets you listen to music and speech at much lower, much healthier levels because the audio doesn’t have to drown out background noise.
