If you think implanting a chip in your body is radical, wait until you hear about brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which eliminate the middleware and let your brain communicate directly with the machines.

Along with dozens of companies, including big names like Meta and Elon Musk’s Neuralink, that are exploring the potential benefits of BCIs, security researchers at the NCC Group have published a whitepaper examining the technology and outlining the challenges that must be overcome before it can take our smart, connected lives to the next level.

“Despite the potential benefits of BCIs, the reality is that they integrate technology with our brains,” the researchers argue in the paper. “[This] technology may be insecure and vulnerable to attack, which in turn could compromise the privacy and integrity of an individual’s brain activity.”

In their paper titled “Internet of Thinks,” the authors explain that BCI technology, which is attracting significant amounts of investment, builds on decades of neuroscience research and leverages advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).
