Procreate is the company behind apps like Procreate, Procreate Dreams, and Procreate Pocket: creative apps that let you create and animate art using your iPad and Apple Pencil. Now, the company has also revealed its stance on generative AI.

RIP Adobe?! Procreate CEO Says NO to Generative AI, Artists Rejoice!

If you were hoping to get AI capabilities in the Procreate app anytime soon, James Cuda’s statement on X Sunday night likely disappointed you: Procreate will not be leaning on AI. Instead, according to Cuda, “we will not be introducing generative AI into our products.”

The company's reasoning for avoiding AI is that "creativity is made, not generated," according to a statement on the Procreate website. Furthermore, the company seems to believe that AI "is built on a foundation of theft; the technology is steering us toward a dire future."

That’s not to say Procreate doesn’t see the potential of AI, but it does seem to believe that creativity is a uniquely human trait. That’s why Cuda said AI won’t be coming to Procreate. Instead, works created by artists in the Procreate app will remain available only to the artist, and artists won’t be tracked by Procreate. “We have great respect for your hard-won skills,” the company wrote.
