In 2016, the Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy told the heartbreaking story of two girls, Audrie Pott and Daisy Coleman. According to the documentary, both girls were sexually abused when they were minors. Sadly, Audrie committed suicide after experiencing abuse and shame from her peers. Daisy Coleman, however, told her story with sensitivity and spoke candidly about the abuses she and her family endured. Four years after the documentary was released, Coleman committed suicide.

According to the documentary, Daisy Coleman sneaked out of her home and met her girlfriend before arriving at a party. TIME Magazine reported that the duo partied with high school boys. After drinking too much, Coleman passed out and that’s when the sexual assault occurred. According to The Guardian, Coleman was allegedly sexually assaulted by an older man named Matthew Barnett. The accused then left her outside her home in the cold. A short time later, her mother discovered Coleman outside the house, wearing only a T-shirt.

The documentary also revealed that Daisy Coleman accused Matthew Barnett of sexual abuse. However, he claimed the sex was consensual and denied leaving her outside his home. The New York Times, citing her mother, reported that Daisy Coleman was harassed at school and online after the incident. However, in January 2014, Barnett pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was sentenced to two years of probation, according to CBS News.
