Disney and Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine" took theaters to their highest point yet this year, opening domestically to $211 million last weekend, after Pixar's "Inside Out 2" topped $600 million.

There’s no doubt that anyone with a stake in movie screenings is thrilled with the results of the past two months. Disney’s two powerful tentpoles have been in stark contrast to a sluggish run at the box office that began in January and became especially troubling in May, as the summer began with a fizzle when “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” underperformed.
But they were followed by strong outings for the latest in the “Bad Boys,” “Despicable Me,” “A Quiet Place” and “Planet of the Apes” franchises. By the time the standalone sequel to 1996’s “Twister” topped $150 million in its second weekend in July, it felt like the continuation of a miraculous run.
And that's the problem. It will take more than a miracle to get the 2024 domestic box office back to last year's level.
