The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said Monday that it has activated programs to assist other agencies in containing the oil spill from the sunken vessel M/T Terra Nova off the coast of Limay, Bataan.

In a statement, Environment Minister Maria Antonio Yulo-Loyzaga said an investigation had already been carried out to determine the location of the sunken ship as weather conditions improved last week.

Yulo-Loyzaga said the DENR, particularly the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), has taken necessary measures to determine the extent of the impact of the oil spill.

“The EMB is responsible for testing the water quality and the air quality, interpreting what has actually happened in the water bodies on the coast and on land and of course whether the air quality is safe or whether there is contamination from the evaporation of the oil,” she said.
