Donald Trump told Fox News' Bret Baier that he "will make a choice for a vice president today," and that the announcement is expected shortly thereafter.

Vivek Ramaswamy says JD Vance is living proof of the American dream, perfect choice for Trump's VP

Baier recounted on the broadcast a phone call he had with Trump this morning as he recovers from an assassination attempt and lamented that a judge dismissed charges against him alleging criminal confidential documents.

Speculation has focused on three possible picks: Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH). They’ve been the focus of media attention and profiles for weeks, though other names have been bandied about since it became clear Trump had secured the nomination. They include Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii. There’s even been some consideration of former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, Trump’s chief rival for the nomination, as a kind of unifying ticket, though she’s still considered a longshot. Haley was recently added to the slate of speakers at the GOP convention in Milwaukee. The RNC begins this afternoon.

The last time a major presidential candidate announced a running mate after the start of a party convention was in 1988, when then-Vice President George Bush chose Dan Quayle as his running mate.
