If you think your Ryzen PC is faster than before, be careful: there might be a strange bug.

Several AMD Ryzen owners took to Reddit to share that their Ryzen processor had increased its clock speed on its own. Technically known as overclocking, the process has its benefits when carefully managed by experts, but will usually have a detrimental impact on the PC under such automatic, unsupervised conditions.

“Overclocking can shorten the lifespan of the device because it will run at much higher temperatures, especially if there is inadequate cooling because someone did not intend to overclock,” Samantha Zeigler, a security researcher at Tripwire, explained in an email to Lifewire.

Overclocking forces processors to run at higher speeds than manufacturers intended. The most immediate impact of this accelerated performance is that it generates more heat because the processor uses more electricity.
