While Facebook has ended support for the older Oculus Go standalone virtual reality headset, the company has taken an important step that should help ensure its wider adoption.

Facebook unveils standalone VR headset, Oculus Go

The social media giant has released a software update to enable full root access to the Oculus Go headset without the need for jailbreaking, as reported by the official Oculus developer blog. The move has long been rumored, especially since id Software founder John Carmack, the consulting chief technology officer for Oculus VR, said in September that he was in favor of unlocking the device.

“This opens up the possibility of using the hardware for more things today, and means that a randomly discovered, shrink-wrapped headset could be updated to the final software version 20 years from now, long after the over-the-air update servers have shut down,” Carmack said in a tweet last month.

So what does this mean, exactly? The unlocked operating system will allow Oculus Go owners to, well, do pretty much whatever they want. Install whatever works, or customize the device to your own tastes and needs. Savvy developers could keep the Go useful and fun long after Facebook has abandoned it altogether.
