#FreeFortnite is dominating social media as developer Epic Games takes aim at Apple and Google. But some mobile gamers are wondering what the future holds as their favorite pastime remains in limbo.

Epic vs. Apple lawsuit outcome explained

The three companies reached an impasse after price negotiations failed and the mobile platforms pulled Fortnite from their app stores, denying players access to major Fortnite updates.

“A lot of mobile players I’ve seen in our community seem to be rallying behind the #FreeFortnite cause… and as a player, that’s understandable,” podcast host and tech enthusiast NerdBomber told Lifewire over the phone. “Of course the game is still playable if it was downloaded prior to the removal, but if you’ve sunk countless hours and money into a game, it hurts to know you’re going to be cut off from new updates and seasons.”

The concerns of mobile-only gamers came to fruition earlier than expected. On August 20, Fortnite announced its final multiplatform tournament series: the #FreeFortnite Cup. The cup, which kicked off on August 23, four days before Fortnite’s next game update rolls out, is being marketed as “the final days of the entire Fortnite community’s ability to play together” and has an explicitly anti-Apple slant, including non-Apple tech prizes for the first 1,200 “apple eaters” on the map.
