You’re walking down the street, listening to a radio station. You’re not paying much attention to the songs and their lyrics, just looking for a pleasant distraction while you go about your day. As the songs pass by, your subconscious picks up a melody it likes, pinging you to remember the exact source and the lyrics.

Unfortunately, your conscious mind can’t remember the details because it wasn’t paying much attention to them at the time. So now you’re stuck with a vague tune in your head, with no lyrics and no name. Generally, we learn to live with the earworm and eventually push it away.

Luckily, Google has thought long and hard about this problem and has given us the perfect solution. Google’s latest addition to its Machine Learning-powered solutions, called ‘Hum to search’, is set to change the game forever and today we’re going to tell you everything you need to know about it. So without further ado, let’s get started.

Starting October 15, Google is giving users the ability to search for a song in the most innovative and convenient way possible. Thanks to ‘Hum to search’, you can literally hum a song you want to find and Google will present you with a list of related songs. Interestingly enough, Google even ranks the potentially related songs based on how closely your humming — or whistling — matches the original melody. So the next time you forget a song, all you have to do is hum the melody to Google and the ingenious search engine will do the rest.
