Senator Grace Poe said Wednesday (July 31) that government-funded animal shelters should not become death traps.

“Instead, they should be saving the lives of abandoned animals, who could potentially find a new home and be cared for,” she said.
Poe pointed this out after hearing that cats and dogs had drowned in the San Juan shelter during the recent typhoon.
“The sad reality in the country's animal shelters has once again reared its head with the drowning of cats and dogs in the San Juan City shelter during the onslaught of Super Typhoon Carina and Habagat,” she said.
