Early in the pandemic, when people were desperate for toilet paper, I was whining about a much less important possession: SodaStream cans. They had become impossible to obtain, and the fizzy liquid I’d become addicted to had been replaced by pitiful tap water.

Never pay for sparkling water again! (Sodamod Sodastream tutorial)

It turns out you don’t really need the replacement canisters, you just need what’s in them: carbon dioxide. Specifically, you need liquid CO₂, and there are cheaper, more sustainable ways to get that.

While some have found a way to fill those cylinders using a complicated process associated with paintball, there is a very simple solution: buy a real CO₂ cylinder.

CO₂ tanks come in all different sizes, but most people want to start small with a 20-gallon tank. It takes up more space than your SodaStream alone, but you can tuck it in a closet, under a table, or behind a door. I have mine docked under my tea and beverage station, and yes, I can hear you judging me for having a beverage station, over the internet.
