Hillsong Church became a hot topic when several celebrities attended its services. However, the megachurch has been the center of several scandals, making people suspicious of its activities. In November 2020, former pastor Carl Lentz was fired due to moral lapses. Later reports indicated that Lentz had an extramarital affair with a woman and had been unfaithful in his marriage. In addition, the Hillsong megachurch has faced several controversies, including allegations of sexual abuse.

In 2019, one of the church’s former members accused Hillsong Church of homophobia. According to Business Insider, the former member noted that she had come out as bisexual to one of the church’s pastors. Though the megachurch promoted inclusivity, the pastor told her that her sexual orientation would be “a problem.” Her mental health deteriorated afterward, and she even considered suicide.

In November 2020, founder Brian Houston fired Carl Lentz for "moral failings." Lentz also admitted to "infidelity" in his marriage and having an affair with a woman. Meanwhile, Page Six reported that the former pastor had more than one affair during his time at the church. Lentz's former nanny accused him of sexual abuse.
