A year ago, Hollywood was in the midst of a historic work stoppage, with two unions—the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA—walking the picket lines outside every major studio in town. Though both unions eventually reached new three-year agreements, the film and television industry is still reeling from the fallout.

For most of last year, manufacturing executives held out hope that opportunities would improve once the new deals, each more than 100 days in the making, were completed. But for a variety of reasons, that hasn’t happened.

An ongoing pattern of production declines that began before the strikes only accelerated in the second half of last year. U.S. production was down 40% in Q2 2024 compared to pre-strike Hollywood, according to a recent report from ProdPro. Globally, it’s down 16%.
