Heads-up displays in cars are going virtual, giving you more information and entertainment while driving.

How augmented reality is changing the way we work

BMW recently unveiled its new i Vision Dee concept car, which gives drivers the ability to choose how much augmented reality (AR) they want to see while on the road. Drivers can select driving information, data from their communication systems, an augmented reality project, or a completely virtual experience with tinted windows while driving autonomously. The new system is just one of many augmented reality systems that could soon be in a car near you.

“The automotive industry has come a long way from just being an infotainment system,” Gregory Thomas, director of the Center for Design Research at the University of Kansas, who studies augmented reality in cars, told Lifewire in an email interview. “They’ve taken a lot of the same technology and adapted it to make it more useful to the driver.”

The BMW i Vision Dee, which stands for 'Digital Emotional Experience', uses the entire windscreen as a display and combines the functions of a dashboard with those of an infotainment system and augmented reality functions.
