The next version of macOS Big Sur improves the experience of running iPad apps on M1 Macs, leaving people wondering if touchscreen Macs will come in the future.

Hands-on with macOS Big Sur design, apps, Control Center, and more!

Two changes in macOS 11.3 beta make running iPad apps on your Apple Silicon Mac a lot less tedious. One is that you can now enjoy much larger windows for the apps (if your monitor is large enough to display them).

The other is an improvement to the way the Mac translates trackpad and keyboard presses into touch actions in the iOS app. These changes may simply be to make the app more pleasant to use. Or perhaps Apple is preparing for the launch of the touchscreen Mac.

“I don't believe larger windows and better keyboard and trackpad support mean a touch Mac will become a reality anytime soon,” Mac and iOS software engineer Jacob Gorban told Lifewire via email.
