More and more companies are combining fitness and gaming, and if done right, it could be the next big thing, experts say.

Is fitness becoming mainstream?

Now, companies like Peloton have added gaming options to their workout lineups, and VR headsets from companies like Oculus offer fitness-based games like Supernatural and Beat Saber. What’s missing from the fitness-based video game landscape, however, is that one hit game that can satisfy both gamers and fitness fanatics.

"If they're done right, I think fitness video games are fantastic. There needs to be an understanding from both [fitness and gaming] industries about what makes a good fitness routine and what makes a good game," Rex Freiberger, co-CEO of Gadget Review, told Lifewire in an email.

When you think of video games and fitness, you might think of Dance Dance Revolution or Wii Sports. While both games did well, they weren’t specifically targeted at the fitness market. Freiberger said that it takes more than that to be successful in gaming and fitness today.
