Nearly 13 years after its original release, League of Legends is still one of the most popular games in the world, with millions of players playing each month. This is largely due to new champions, as the Riot Games MOBA regularly gains new characters.
Who are the oldest champions in League of Legends?
Every few months, Riot teases the release of a new League character. Each champion has different abilities and is meant to be played in specific roles on the Summoner’s Rift map, as well as in limited-time modes like Nexus Blitz and, more recently, the extremely popular League Arena. The developers also release “reworks” for champions that have aged poorly, updating their visuals and abilities to bring them up to date.
At launch, League had just 40 champions, many of which have changed quite a bit since then. Back then, Riot was releasing champions on a very frequent schedule, which quickly led to a glut of unique characters to play.
There are now 168 different champions on the League roster, despite the Riot team gradually reducing the character release schedule to around five or six per year.
