Meta's new text-based social network could destroy what's left of Twitter and attack the fediverse as well.

Meta's new Threads app sparks social media war with Twitter

The decentralized social media network, codenamed P92, could be compatible with ActivityPub, which services like Mastodon are built on. Users will be able to log in with their existing Instagram credentials, meaning it will be trivially easy to join Mastodon instances around the world. It’s a great move by Meta, but it could be just as dangerous for decentralized social media as it was for Twitter.

"The one feature Facebook is missing is the ability to give its users autonomy. Social media apps like Mastodon don't have a parent company that controls them. It runs on independent servers and its users have the freedom to create their own code of conduct," marketing expert Ryan Faber told Lifewire via email.

Twitter is on its way out. Since Musk’s takeover, the trolls and bad guys who always wanted to ruin Twitter for the rest of us have finally taken over. Many have moved to Mastodon, a decentralized collection of many federated servers that you can join. At its simplest, it’s a bit like email, in that you choose your email provider, but you can email anyone using a different email service.
