Synaptics recently announced a new family of high-performance chips for smart video devices that offer “next-generation” AV1 video decoding, which the company says will be a requirement for viewing content on sites like Netflix and YouTube in the future.

Many of us use Netflix and YouTube as replacements for the cable TV packages we once had connected to our televisions. As online content becomes a commodity, it means we need to find ways to improve the way we access that content. One of the biggest improvements to this could come with the AV1 codec.

“Next-generation codecs like AV1, which offer an average of 60% less bandwidth than h.264, are critical to the sustainability of video distribution into the future,” Steven Tripsas, head of solutions architecture at Zype, told us via email.

One of the biggest problems with online video sharing today is the codec used to stream the content to users.
