Wizards of the Coast has created a new Magic: The Gathering level filled with animals and a new mechanic called Forage. The Forage mechanic captures the themes and flavors of the Bloomburrow set while opening up a realm of possibilities for graveyards and food tokens.

BLOOMBURROW – Fast Forage | Standard Deck Tech with LegenVD | MTG Arena

The Forage mechanic in MTG has you exile three cards from your graveyard or sacrifice a Food token to activate an ability and/or gain value from your actions. Sometimes there is an additional mana cost associated with the Forage mechanic.

Banishing cards is beneficial within specific Graveyard builds or even Aggro decks full of useless creatures in the Graveyard. Using Food tokens as another option is perfectly flavorful and possibly easier to sacrifice than banishing cards from your Graveyard.

The first Bloomburrow spoiler to show off the Forage mechanic was Camellia, the Seedmiser. The Squirrel Warlock comes in the MTG colorway Black and Green and uses Forage to add +1/+1 counters to any Squirrel you control. In addition to paying the Forage cost on Camellia, the Seedmiser, activating the ability requires an additional two paid mana.
