If your autocorrect diving on your iPhone is causing you one too many embarrassing situations, you can train it to do better. Just like on Mac, there are a few ways to add custom words to your iPhone’s dictionary.

Your iPhone’s dictionary picks up words from your address book that you can use to your advantage. The next time AutoCorrect changes a perfectly valid word into something else, simply open the Contacts app on your iPhone and create a new contact. Use the first name field to add as many words as you like, each separated by a single space. When you’re done, save the contact and try typing any of those words anywhere on your iPhone. You’ll notice that they’re all easy to type, don’t have red lines underneath them, and that they’ve been added to your iPhone’s dictionary.

Your Mac has a handy Learn Spelling feature that lets you add custom words to its dictionary. This feature is also available on your iPhone, but only in Apple’s Pages app. To get started, download it from the App Store and open a new document. Type in a word that your iPhone’s dictionary doesn’t recognize, such as “microtransaction.” Double-tap the word to select it, then tap the right arrow in the pop-up menu until you see Learn Spelling. Tap it to add the word to your iPhone’s dictionary. This tip was discovered by Mastodon user Ceolaf.

The custom word works immediately in Pages, but it may take some time for it to roll out to all iOS devices.
