While Windows 11 lets you extract files from a number of archive formats, creating them was limited to ZIP until now. Windows 11 now also lets you natively create 7Z and TAR archives, which can be done just like you would a normal ZIP file, and without having to rely on third-party tools.

Create Zip, TAR, and 7z Files Natively with File Explorer in Windows 11

Previously, Windows 11 came with support for extracting various archive file formats, including .rar, .7z, .tgz, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and many more. However, its creation was limited to ZIP archives only. At the time of writing, support for creating 7Zand TAR archive file formats is only available on the Windows Insiders Canary channel, starting with build 25992. It's unclear when it will roll out to users on stable builds, but one can expect it to be no longer than a few weeks.
