Gmail is a bit like a teenager’s room; messy with socks strewn about. From promotional emails to credit card offers, everything just sort of lives together. It also makes it harder to find a specific email address in the cluster.

It’s true, the introduction of categorized emails, where Gmail separated emails into different labels, was a huge relief and kept our primary inbox a little cleaner. What did need some tweaking, however, was Gmail’s native search functionality.

Unlike the web application, the search function went through all the tags and categories and compiled a cluttered list of results. While we can see the value of a thorough search, this made it doubly difficult to find an email in the clutter.

Fortunately, Google has introduced “search chips” in its Gmail application, which seems to change the rules of the game dramatically.
