Experiment without breaking your machine

Want to try out Ubuntu to see if you can handle Linux? Well, it’s completely free, so there’s no reason not to give it a try. You will need a spare computer or a spare hard drive on your current machine to run it, though.

If you don’t have these options or don’t want to mess with your existing systems, you can install Ubuntu in a virtual machine on your main PC. The free tool I use is called VirtualBox. It’s very similar to VMware Workstation, except it’s free.

In this article I will show you how to quickly run a copy of Ubuntu as a virtual machine within your current operating system. This can be Windows, Mac or Linux.
