Pokémon Go first added its buddy feature in 2018, then expanded upon it significantly in 2019 by making your buddy appear on the map. The app walked all players through the process of adding a buddy Pokémon after each feature update, but if for some reason you bypassed these in-app tutorials, you can add your first Pokémon buddy by selecting your Trainer profile icon in the lower-left corner of the map screen and tapping Buddy History or Buddy.
