So you consider yourself the opposite of a silent quitter (which is a huge misconception, if you didn’t already know). Instead, you’re an overachiever: you’re always striving to achieve more and more. As we’ve said before, the stress that comes from pushing yourself too hard can backfire and actually undermine your ability to do your job well. Even if you love putting all your time and effort into your work, it’s important to set boundaries before you overachieve and end up in a massive burnout.

Why You Should Stop Being an Overachiever at Work

For many people, fear is a major component of their overachieving. The risks of overextending yourself can even harm your career prospects, as well as your personal well-being. Here are some of the downsides of overachieving at work and what you can do to manage them while still being your highest performing self.

First, there’s a crucial caveat to note: Many employees know that they have to perform above and beyond their capabilities to be treated the same as the bare minimum of other people, depending on their race or gender. Yet knowing how to set boundaries at work is a necessary skill to avoid burnout in the long run.

If you say yes to every little thing at work, you spread yourself too thin. You may take on tasks when you are not the best person for the job. Moreover, this form of overachievement leads to personal and professional burnout.
