Your main goal in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is to infiltrate the Tower of Shadow and pursue the missing demigod Miquella. However, you're given little information on how to accomplish this.

Players are tasked with burning the sealing tree that holds the shadow spell to the tower, but that’s about it. With so much of the Land of Shadow to explore and only that one instruction to follow, it can be easy to get overwhelmed, but the process is actually much simpler than it sounds.
In true Elden Ring style, you'll need to defeat two ridiculously tough bosses to complete this quest and progress through Shadow of the Erdtree's main story.
These serve as the next two main bosses of the Erdtree DLC expansion anyway, so the overarching goal is more of a way to get you there anyway. As you might expect from the name, Messmer's Kindling can be claimed from Messmer the Impaler, the ruling lord of Shadow Keep in the northern Land of Shadow. To enter, you'll either have to battle the Golden Hippopotamus guarding the main gate or sneak in through the eastern entrance, but either way you'll be in for a tough fight. Thankfully, you'll automatically earn the Kindling for defeating him, so there's no chance of losing it.
