How to Use the AVERAGEIF Function in Excel

The AVERAGEIF function combines the IF and AVERAGE functions in Excel. This combination allows you to find the average or arithmetic mean of those values in a selected range of data that meets specific criteria.

The IF portion of the function determines which data meets the specified criteria, while the AVERAGE portion calculates the average or mean. Often, AVERAGEIF uses rows of data, called records, in which all of the data in each row is related.

In Excel, the syntax of a function refers to the layout of the function and includes the function name, parentheses, and arguments.
