Creating the perfect Apex Legends map is a tricky task, simply because you've got to cater to both casual players and ALGS pros. Broken Moon was particularly polarizing in this regard when it first launched, but a major map update for Season 21 attempts to strike a more pleasing balance.

That Season 21 teaser where Olympus crashed into Broken Moon, causing a massive explosion in the skybox before matches? That’s a literal, canonical event in Apex lore, and it has massive implications for the map. For one, the explosion in the stasis net left the map completely exposed, resulting in the Broken Moon region being torn away from Cleo entirely. It now floats freely between Cleo’s gravitational fields and the planet Boreas. The debris and explosions also left tangible changes to the map: Promenade was, for all intents and purposes, bombed and will not return.

The Promenade has long been a sore point for Broken Moon. The large POI effectively served as a massive bottleneck and wall in the middle of the map. And with zip-rails running its entire length, the spot became a nightmare to try and rotate through.

“When we first designed [Promenade], we wanted it to be a terrifying place to dive into and travel through,” lead level designer Steve Young said in a press conference ahead of Season 21. “But after seeing the feedback over time, we realized that we might have made it a little too terrifying in that regard.”
