The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) was criticized by Senator Raffy Tulfo for failing to impose sanctions on airlines that allegedly faked flight cancellations with the intention of randomly deporting passengers.

During the joint hearing of the Senate Committees on Tourism and Public Services on Wednesday (June 21), CAB Director Carmelo Arcilla said it is illegal for airlines to claim a flight has been canceled in order to free up seats.

Before he spoke, senators heard testimony from a Cebu Pacific passenger who was forced to rebook a later flight after being told her flight was canceled. However, the passenger’s aunt found her a seat on an earlier flight that she was told did not exist.

“It's illegal,” Arcilla told senators in response to the apparent “mode” of fake flight cancellations by airlines.
