Apple has confirmed that the iOS 14 update is shortening battery life for some users, but experts say there are things you can do to mitigate the problem.

How to Fix Rapid Battery Drain After iOS 14 Update

Owners have recently been reporting unusual battery drain after updating to iOS 14 and watchOS 7. The official fix for this issue at the moment is to wipe your iPhone and Apple Watch, but some experts say there are other steps you can take to reduce your battery consumption.

“The first source of battery drain we identified was the addition of widgets to the iOS 14 home screen,” Colin Boyd, Outreach Coordinator for the mobile phone comparison site UpPhone, said in an email interview. “Since widgets are such an active part of an iPhone’s functionality, they can consume a significant amount of power on a daily basis.”

To find your iOS widgets, navigate to your home screen and swipe left, Boyd says. You’ll then be taken to a page with several widgets that come standard with the iOS 14 update. If you see that you don’t need any of these widgets, tap and hold on the one you don’t need and tap Edit Home Screen when given the option.
