Apple’s latest iOS 18 update brings a much-needed improvement to the Maps app: a “Search Here” button. This seemingly small addition addresses a long-standing frustration for Apple Maps users and marks a significant step forward in the app’s functionality.

The addition of this feature brings Apple Maps more in line with its main competitor, Google Maps, which has offered similar functionality for years. It's a clear sign that Apple is listening to user feedback and working to close the gap in the navigation app market.

For years, Apple Maps users have struggled with the app’s tendency to automatically track their movements and update search results as they scroll through different areas. While the feature had its benefits, it often made it difficult to explore locations outside of one’s immediate vicinity. The new “Search Here” button changes all that.

Now, when users move the map to another location and tap the “Search here” button, they can search specifically within that area. This means you can easily explore Chinese restaurants or toy stores in New York City while sitting in your living room in San Francisco, without the map constantly trying to redirect you back to your current location.
