CNN: Warren Jeffs gets life in prison
Convicted polygamist Warren Jeffs, once a leader of the Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), is now in prison with no release date set. Over the years, Jeffs and the FLDS church have been the subject of multiple true crime documentaries for their controversial practices. As a leader, Jeffs rose to prominence in the 1990s, eventually landing on the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted List. He had nearly 80 wives, many of whom were minors, including his legal wife. Then, in 2011, a long-running case against him resulted in convictions for sexual abuse.
Warren Jeffs reportedly evaded the law and remained a fugitive until 2006, when authorities arrested him in Las Vegas. Prior to that, in 2005, Jeffs had been charged in Arizona and convicted in Utah in 2007 of aiding and abetting rape. However, the Supreme Court overturned the conviction and he was extradited to Texas.
Then, in 2011, Warren Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting two underage girls, his so-called “spiritual wives.” The convict was sentenced to life in prison with an additional 20 years. Jeffs will likely remain in prison until he is eligible for parole in 2038.
