The list of candidates willing to run with Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, grew shorter on Monday, with North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer both dropping out.

The key decision has been in the spotlight since Vice President Harris became the Democratic favorite for the November election more than a week ago, after President Joe Biden ended his bid for the White House.

Vice presidential candidates can be used to balance out a presidential candidate's position and appeal to a broader group of voters. Harris is considering a slate of mostly white, male candidates.

Cooper withdrew from Harris' pool of vice presidential nominees, saying in a statement Monday: "I was honored to be considered for this role. This simply wasn't the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket."
