The Supreme Court (SC) was asked on Thursday (June 22) whether it had issued a declaration stating that detained former Senator Leila De Lima can file a fresh petition for bail.

Up front: Will former Senator Leila de Lima settle scores with former President Duterte?

In a June 22 letter addressed to Supreme Court spokesman Brian Hosaka, attorney Ferdinand Topacio requested “clarification as an officer of the court on the veracity and credibility of the opinion cited in the news article, and if true, the legal and/or publicity basis of such media opinion.”

Topacio cited news articles quoting the Supreme Court as saying, “The former senator can also file a motion to have her released on bail at any time during the trial if she believes the evidence presented by the prosecution is weak.”

The articles came after Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court (RTC) presiding judge Romeo Buenaventura rejected the bail requests of De Lima and her co-defendants.
