It may sound obvious, but food and fuel are essential for your people to survive in Manor Lords. The tricky part is that during the winter, fuel consumption doubles and most food sources are unavailable. Therefore, as soon as you start playing, you should prioritize gathering food and firewood to prepare yourself for the cold times.
Manor Lords is a fairly peaceful game, even on the default difficulty. You don’t have to fight much if you don’t want to, but you do need to have some military units to defend against raiders. Raids are random events in Manor Lords, and my city was attacked just a year after I started the game.
The game displays a counter in the lower left corner of the screen when you are about to be attacked and how many days you have left to prepare. There is usually enough time to prepare, but that means you have to divert resources from daily tasks to producing (or trading) military equipment.
