Get ready to control your smart refrigerator, air conditioner, dishwasher and robot vacuum cleaner via your favorite smart home app with the new Matter 1.2 standard coming soon to smart gadgets and appliances.

What's New with Matter 1.2 – Silicon Labs

Smart home devices are great for controlling your lights, seeing who’s at the door, and even vacuuming your floors with minimal effort, but until Matter, they all used their own proprietary standards. You had to either hunt for devices that were compatible with an Apple or Google Home app, or use one of the manufacturer’s own proprietary (and usually poorly designed) apps to control your devices.

But now Matter has changed all that, and the new version, Matter 1.2, is pushing even more interoperability features into the standard. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), a group of manufacturers and technology companies like LG, Apple, Google, Oppo and more, has added nine new devices to the standard, meaning we can all control our smart stuff through the app or system we like, like controlling your fridge from your iPhone or your robot vacuum cleaner from your Samsung Galaxy.

The standard now includes refrigerators, room air conditioners, dishwashers, washing machines, robot vacuums, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, air quality sensors, air purifiers and fans. Each appliance type also gets support for more than just basic level controls, such as laundry progress notifications and fan functions such as airflow direction and oscillation modes.
