Michaela Coel is set to star in the 10-episode drama series First Day on Earth. In addition to starring, the multi-award-winning actress will also write and executive produce the planned series, which will be co-produced by HBO and the BBC.

Coel will play British novelist Henri, whose professional and personal life seem to be going nowhere. According to the film's synopsis, when she is "offered a job on a film in Ghana, West Africa — her parents' homeland, where her estranged father lives — she can't resist the chance to reconnect with him and the land of her origins. But when she arrives, neither the job nor her father are what she expected, and Henri soon finds herself navigating danger and hypocrisy, making new friends, shedding her illusions, and creating a new sense of identity — one that could make her stronger, but also break her."

Other executive producers on the show include Jesse Armstrong of Succession, Phil Clarke of Such Brave Girls and Roberto Troni for Various Artists Limited (VAL), Jo McClellan for the BBC and Piers Wenger for A24.
