After several rigorous public tests, the latest beta of New World finally shows the potential of Amazon Game Studios’ first massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, even if that potential hasn’t been fully realized yet.

New World: Is it worth playing in 2024? – Review after 2000 hours

It’s impossible to ignore that New World has had a rather illustrious past over the past four or five years of its development. One of three games originally announced by Amazon in 2016, the title was the only one to survive after the others on the slate were either shelved or canceled altogether. To make matters worse, the various public tests that Amazon Game Studios held revealed a rough experience, and one that suffered from a myriad of balance issues.

Now it seems like Amazon is finally starting to figure out what makes New World so much fun, but with less than a month to go until its full release, it may not be the perfect MMO many are waiting for. At least not yet.

One of the key mechanics that sets New World apart is the use of factions to create a constantly warring world for players to explore. Sure, you can choose whether or not to engage in player versus player (PVP) combat, but you’ll still need to pick a faction and begin helping your particular group establish its power in this, ahem, new world.
