Today, Nintendo announced the acquisition of Shiver Entertainment Studio from Embracer Group. This is huge news for Nintendo fans, as they are the developers behind popular ports for the Switch like Mortal Kombat 1 and Hogwarts Legacy. Unlike Xbox and Sony, Nintendo is more known for its first-party games and often does its own thing when it comes to gaming. As such, this news comes as a huge surprise, especially considering Microsoft recently closed 4 studios following its acquisition and Sony buying Bungie. Many are wondering if this was the right decision.

According to the acquisition notice, their goal is to “secure high-quality resources for the porting and development of software titles.” The important thing to note is that this shouldn’t affect them in any major way. The notice said, “In the future, even after becoming part of the Nintendo group, Shiver’s focus will remain the same, namely, continuing with assignments that port and develop software for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch.”

Getting Shiver Entertainment works out really well for Nintendo, especially since they did an exceptional job porting Mortal Kombat 1 to the Switch. Considering it’s not available on PS4 or Xbox One. Some of their other ports include Mortal Kombat 11, Hogwarts Legacy, Scribblenauts Mega Pack, and Scribblenauts Showdown.

As for fan reaction, a good speculation from many is that Nintendo will use the Studio to bring more ports to the Switch 2. This would make sense since Nintendo is set to announce the successor to the current console sometime this fiscal year. So while Switch has yet to receive the Wind Waker remake, it’s possible it will release on the Switch 2. And that’s without even mentioning Metroid Prime 4.
