Bangladeshi Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus on Monday called on the international community to end the deadly violence that has plagued his country since students protested against civil service hiring rules.

“I urge world leaders and the United Nations to do everything in their power to end violence against those exercising their right to protest,” the 83-year-old said in a statement.

“There must be investigations into the killings that have already taken place,” he added in his first public comments since the unrest began.

The respected economist is praised for lifting millions of people out of poverty with his pioneering microfinance bank, but he has drawn the enmity of long-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has accused him of “sucking the blood” of the poor.
