After months of casting for the film adaptation of Casey McQuiston's romantic comedy Red, White & Royal Blue, it took producer Sarah Schechter and co-writer/director Matthew López only a few minutes to know they had found the perfect leads in Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine.

“I think there was a period of time where we were desperate to ever find the right — let alone individual — you had to cast a duo here,” López said during a panel for Deadline’s Contenders TV: The Nominees. “That chemistry read was, I think I texted Sarah off-camera on Zoom, like, ‘Here they are. We found them.’”
In addition to a great interpretation of the scene, López recalls that the pair improvised and performed together in a way that, “I remember thinking, ‘Man, if they can successfully improvise as a team on Zoom, I can’t wait to sit in a room with them and really work on it.'”
