Where Are They? | Murder Trial: The Disappearance of Renee and Andrew MacRae

Last year, the BBC released a two-part documentary series, Murder Trial: The Disappearance of Renee and Andrew MacRae. It tells the shocking story of one of the biggest unsolved missing persons cases in Scottish history. The bodies of Renee and her three-year-old son Andrew have not been found since they disappeared in 1976.

As seen in the docuseries, Renee’s BMW car was found burning in a car park near Dalmagarry on the A9 on November 12, 1976. The 36-year-old mother of two had left her Inverness home with Andrew. According to Scottish Police records, 80-year-old William MacDowell was found guilty of Renee and Andrew’s murder in 2022. He was arrested in September 2019 after a decades-long investigation. However, Renee and Andrew’s remains have never been found, despite MacDowell’s conviction.

According to the BBC, Renee and Andrew MacRae’s killer, William MacDowell, died in February 2023 at the age of 81, less than five months after his conviction. He was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 30 years. MacDowell was held at HMP Glenochil in Alloa before his death. Police confirmed that the convict died at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.
